Meet the eligibility requirements
The first step in becoming a registered nurse in the United States is to ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements. The requirements vary from state to state, but generally, you will need to have a nursing degree from an accredited institution, pass the NCLEX-RN exam, and meet any other requirements specific to the state where you wish to practice.
Choose a state
Once you have confirmed that you meet the eligibility requirements, you will need to decide which state you want to apply to for RN licensure. You can only be licensed in one state at a time, although you may be able to obtain a license in additional states through the process of endorsement.
Apply for licensure
You will need to submit an application for licensure to the state board of nursing in the state where you wish to practice. This application will typically include your personal information, educational background, and other supporting documentation.
Pass the NCLEX-RN exam
The NCLEX-RN is a standardized exam that all aspiring registered nurses in the United States must pass in order to be licensed. The exam covers a wide range of topics related to nursing practice, and you will need to demonstrate your knowledge in order to pass.
Complete additional requirements
Depending on the state where you wish to practice, you may need to complete additional requirements before you can be licensed. These may include continuing education courses, background checks, and other requirements.
Receive your RN license
Once you have met all of the requirements and passed the NCLEX-RN exam, you will receive your RN license from the state board of nursing. This license will allow you to practice nursing in that state.
